20 random facts...

1. I woke up tired this morning. (I've actually been waking up tired every morning for quite a while now. You don't have to feel sorry for me, though, it's because I go to bed too late.)*

2. I'm a compulsive blusher. I blush at the mere thought of something hinting at being threatening or embarrassing.

3. I bought José Gonzáléz's CD, because I loved the first Sony Bravia ad so much. I've even got free wallpaper from the website on my desktop.**

4. I had an unhappy childhood. (No fault on my parents' behalf.)

5. I'm having a very happy adulthood.

6. I don't really like getting flowers. I prefer something edible.

7. I said "Hi" to Meg Ryan in Central Park. She was jogging.

8. I rarely buy peanut butter, because when I do, I eat it straight from the tub with a spoon.

9. I've had open heart surgery. Now I've got a long scar right in the middle of my chest. Men are always the ones to ask about it: "How low does it go?" "Do you have any other scars?" and "Did an alien scratch you?" (I kid you not.)

10. Still on the subject of vanity: I was born with a parculiar little extra bit of skin next to my left ear. It feels weird. Not many people notice it, though.

11. I sometimes find it hard to pronounce my own name... (That's why I like my nickname better.) I wish I had my sister's name. :)

12. I can't wait to see the next Sony Bravia ad on TV.***

13. I'm finding it difficult to think of other random facts.

14. I've had 9 pets. (A canary, a rabbit, a hamster, 2 mice and 4 dogs.)

15. I've never read the Bible from front to back. I get distracted easily. I think I'll start by at least studying a book at a time in its entirety.

16. I don't have a very long attention span.

17. I don't like tomatoes, but I love tomato sauce.

18. I once had a nose piercing. All that remains of it now, is a little scar.

19. I took a picture of the Empire State building from the top of one of the Twin Towers on the 9th of September 2001.

20. I've never had a crush someone more than 5 years my senior.

Out of this world

Last Thursday afternoon I escaped from ringing telephones, insignificant client comments on the positioning of heart illustrations on a Valentine's Day 2007 self-adhesive label and other corporate whoring, to the Company Gardens. At the Adderley Street-end of the tree-lined avenue, is St. George's Cathedral. It is a stirring stone building with intricate stained glass windows. Inside an old man, impeccable in his cream-coloured suit, was kneeling in prayer amongst the rows of wooden chairs. For a moment the racing of cars and people outside were forgotten and only respectful serenity existed.

I briefly chatted to the sweet lady behind the reception counter at the National gallery, on my way back to the mundane. Other than Second To None, Celebrating 50 years of women's struggles, nothing showing at the moment made my heart beat faster. I did, however, pick up a flyer advertising Paul Godard and Petra Vandecasteele's “breathtaking journey from Brussels to Cape Town.” Though it lacks an inspiring name, Living A Dream, a multimedia projection, is worth mentioning. One show remains: Saturday, the 14th of October, at noon at the Baxter Theatre. (Book at Computicket.) A DVD is available at R99. Paul’s photographic exhibition will continue until the 26th of October in the Baxter foyer. Judging by their website, it's not something to be ignored if you're in the area.

Paul and Petra had only known each other for 2 weeks before they embarked on a 4 year trip down Africa's East side. It had been Paul's dream to see Africa for 12 years. When he decided "it is now or never," Petra was the last person on his list of 420 people to contact as a possible team mate. But she agreed and, after 9 months of preparation, they were off in their heavily loaded Land Rover. They have since settled in South Africa. Well, I, for one, can't wait to hear the rest! An inspired weekend

This past weekend was one of those. You know, the kind when you just don't have the energy to get up to anything. Aside from having a few friends over for dinner, going out for dinner and breakfast respectively and a Sunday evening church meeting, I did nothing. No hiking, no dancing, no working, no photography, no gym visits, no theatre or movies, nothing. Instead I watched TV (and ate). And boy, am I good at lying on a couch! So, here are some comments on what I saw:

1. The Project Runway finale (repeat). Says a friend, Brad,* "If I ever met Heidi Klum, I would lie on the floor and drool." Hmmm, well, what made me drool, were the frocks. Though it is not my discipline, it is always inspiring to see other designers at work. (P.S. I totally rooted for Chloe Dao, the winner. She was the least diva-esque of them all.)

* Name has been changed to protect identity.

2. I Capture The Castle is a film based on a 1948 novel by the same name, written by Dodie Smith. With a tagline like: "I love, I have loved, I will love," you can imagine the genre. 17-year old Cassandra and her eccentric family live in a decaying English castle. Her father, played by Bill Nighy, hasn't written a word in 12 years despite the enormous success of his first novel. Her stepmother is a nudist. The rest of the film evolves around love triangles. What intrigued me, though, was Mr. Nighy's character's writer's block. It's interesting how sometimes emotional scars can be the muse of a great story, but in other cases it can have the opposite effect. The mind is a powerful thing. (Cool quote: "It's a story about a boy learning to read and is symbolic of understanding.")

3. In keeping with the film theme, I'd like to introduce you to the hugs man, Juan Mann. Here is an article, but watch this clip first. There is an interview on You Tube.
